Crypt on the Green is located just over 10 minutes' walk from Farringdon station in Clerkenwell, London's Little Italy.
In the mid-19th century a wave of immigration created an ethnic Italian enclave in a corner of Clerkenwell. This area, described by Dickens in Oliver Twist, was once a proletarian slum of pickpockets and fence-sitters, and when Italians settled there, the authorities were delighted that these honest workers were replacing the old residents. In 1863, the Italian Church of San Pietro was founded, offering the community a place to worship its religion.
